The Horace Mann Summer Works Program provides Middle and High School students, age 14 and over, with approximately four to six weeks of paid summer job readiness training experience. Throughout the years, teachers of the Deaf have supervised the students in a variety of work situations, both on and off campus, that have included computer technology, desktop publishing, photocopying, building and grounds maintenance, child care, food preparation, cafeteria work, organizing and shelving books in the school library, and theater skills. Along with the vocational training, students participate in classes that focus on work-related math and English where they have the opportunity to update their resumes and take part in formal career assessment inventories.
In addition to the work and study components of the Program, various outside agencies have presented workshops designed to help the students develop self-awareness, self-esteem, values, and self-empowerment. Students are responsible to report to work every day on time, call in to the Program Supervisor if they will be absent due to illness, focus on the job at hand, take initiative, and handle problem situations in productive and mature ways.
