Successes

After earning two degrees from NTID, Xiu began her current job where she was honored as the 2003 Defense Contract Management Agency Outstanding Employee with Disabilities.  She also received the 2004 Greater Boston Federal Executive Board Award for Administrative Excellence.  Xiu serves on the Board of Directors of the Boston Asian Youth Essential Service and is a member of the Asian Deaf Association of New England.  She was also a delegate to the Multicultural Advisory Council of D.E.A.F., Inc. where she has been a peer mentor, assisted with computer projects, and worked in the Shared Reading Project helping families read to their Deaf children.

Challenges

Xiu has faced many challenges including learning English and ASL at age fourteen when she moved to Boston from China.  She also recalls how nervous she was when she applied for a job promotion, but she did it anyway and did get the promotion.

Advice to Horace Mann Students

“I encourage you to get a good education.  Think about your future, go to college, and get a good job.  Don’t give up; you can be successful.  Don’t be afraid to learn; you can do it!”
