Girl Power
Founded in the fall of 2001, Girl Power! is a five-week, after-school program for middle school girls. Within the context of the program, the issues of leadership, team building, decision-making, respect, self-esteem, self-confidence, and cooperation are addressed. With peripheral guidance from the faculty advisors, each week, the girls take turns planning the agenda and leading the weekly meetings. A typical meeting would include informal computer time as the group gathers, planning/discussion time, team building activities, and time to debrief and reflect on the afternoon’s events. Issues that inevitably arise are used as learning moments and are resolved with faculty and student input. A running photographic record is kept so that upon completion of the ten weeks, girls receive memory books to document their collective journeys.
