Leslie J. Cox

Leslie J. Cox
President
New England Society of Black Deaf
Boston Black Deaf Advocate
2002 Recipient

Successes

Leslie feels most proud that he established the New England Society of Black Deaf and the Boston Black Deaf Advocates.

He learned many things from other deaf leaders when he moved to Massachusetts and became involved with the Deaf Community. After participating in several Deaf clubs around Boston, he became active in the Massachusetts State Association for the Deaf. He learned the by-laws and the constitution, and later he became an officer.

Challenges

When Leslie joined the Deaf Clubs and the Massachusetts State Association for the Deaf, he was the only Black member and he felt awkward; but he was not discouraged. He stayed active, became a role model for other Black deaf people, and encouraged them to become active.

Advice to Horace Mann Students

"Graduate from high school. Join MSAD and become active in the Deaf Community."
