Successes
Louis Rivas is most proud of his successes that have helped to support the Deaf Community. In 1977 when he was a student at NTID, there were no sports teams, so he helped to establish the NTID Student Council Athletic Club. In 1978 they became the first Deaf college to host the Eastern Athletic Association Basketball Tournament. He later served as Vice-President of the Revere Deaf Club and two terms as Chairperson of the New England Athletic Association of the Deaf basketball tournaments.
Challenges
Louis enjoys the challenge of taking an idea, planning a strategy, and then making it happen. For example, to help teens learn to become creative leaders, he started the Deaf Youth Leadership Program. Writing dissertation conclusion can be a difficult task, so any help is welcomed.
Advice to Horace Mann Students
“Follow your dreams and you’re sure to be successful. I also want to share this Chinese proverb: ‘You create a problem and you solve it.’ With advice from experienced Deaf and Hard of Hearing leaders, that’s what you have to do.”
