Successes
Rickey studied hard in school and earned a bachelor's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the co-founder and current leader of the Asian Deaf Association of New England. He has served on the board of the National Asian Deaf Congress and is on the Multicultural Advisory Council at D.E.A.F., Inc. He is currently the chairperson of the first-ever Multicultural Conference in the Deaf Community.
Challenges
Rickey's biggest challenge is to overcome communication barriers in the workplace. He relies on interpreters, e-mail, and notes from his co-workers to be sure that he gets all the information. He has also been challenged to learn about many cultures that he has met both personally and professionally.
Advice to Horace Mann Students
"It is very important to have confidence, strong self-esteem, and pride. Be yourself and work hard to finish high school so you can achieve your goals. Learn values from your elders. Learn from their mistakes as well as your own."
